The city numbers 1.100.000 of citizens, 50% of which are russians, another half – tartars, bashkirs and other nationalities.The major part of the population are women.
Ufa is the capital of the Bashkortostan republic, situated in the eastern Russia, at the foot of the Ural mountains, at the confluence of the White, Ufa and Dema rivers.
As far back as in 1574 Ufa was based as a fortress – the guard of bashkir lands. The city is believed to be named after a Turkic ancient word “ufak”, that means “little one”.
Over the years Ufa had lost its military defendent importance.
The city has grown and become a big administrative and economic center of Bashkortostan.
The Bashkortostan Republic has large oil resources, and it is therefore one of the biggest oil refinement regions of Russia.
Ufa is a big industrial city, manufactures include electric energy, mine equipment , oil refinement, oil chemistry and food industry.
The city is also an educational center. It is the site of the Bashkir State University, the Oil University, the Aviation University.
Ufa is a cultural center of Russia as well. There are a youth theatre, an opera house and others, a great number of museums and expositions.
The ancient center of the city keeps elements of the cultural past of bashkirs and tartars. The mosque Lya Lya Tulip is the place of pride for the citizens.
Today’s Ufa is a comlex of isolated housing estates extending up to 50 kilometers from the south-east to the noth-east. The longest street of the capital has the length of ten kilometers
