Population 276.090. The town is located in the centre of the european part of Russia, at the confluence of the Volga and Kostroma rivers.
It was found in the XII century. The town centre is build up with the houses erected in the fashion of XVIII-XIX centiries.
The town was initially styled in adherence to the Russian classicism, with the typical constructions like the Gostiny Dvor, the Fire-Tower, the Noble Assembly building ( where aristocratic meetings and balls were taking place in the past ).
The Saint Epithany Convent and the “Voskresenye na Debre” church are historical memorials of XVII century.
The pearl of Kostroma is undoubtedly the Ipatyev Monastery, situated not far from the town. In due time this imposing monastery sheltered the founder of the Romanoff tzar dynasty, Michael Fyodorovitch, and his mother.
The present day Kostroma is a large industrial centre with manufacture of textile, machinery and footwear.
The town is an administrative centre of the Kostroma province. The major part of the province territory is covered with forests, therefore a prominent wood supplier not only for Russia, but also for Europe.
