Population 1.276.560.
It is situated in central part of Russia, at the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers. The admimistrative centre of the Nizhny Novgorod province.
From 1932 to 1990 it carried the name of Gorky, in honour of Maksim Gorky, a famous Soviet writer, whose house one can see in the centre of the city.
As follows from russian chronicles, the city was found by the prince Yuri Dolgorooky in 1221.
In 1341 the city became the capital of the Suzdal-Nizhnenovgorod principality.
The historical centre remains well intact, with a great number of monuments and memorials of architecture and culture, the reason why Unesco put Nizhny Novgorod on the list of 100 cities, which are of historical and cultural importance.
The favourite places the tourists flock to are the Uspenskaya church, the Strohanovskaya church and the Saint Dimitry Tower.
The residents take a special pride in, of course, the Kremlin, which underwent restoration several times in ХIX and XX centuries. was
In 1817 the Makaryevskaya Fair, one of the largest in Russia, had been relocated to Nizhny Novgorod and since then the city became an important centre of international commerce. Tradespeople from Russia, Europe and Asia came together to do profitable business here. The Fair influenced the reconstruction of the city bringing forth a whole complex of new buildings, shopping malls and storehouses to be included.
Nowadays Nizhny Novgorod is one of the largest industrial centres of Russia.
The shipyard “Krasnoye Sormovo“, dated as back as 1849, is the largest enterprise of the city. The manpower of more than 10.000 is involved here in the shipbuilding and manufacture of railroad cars. The Kurbatov factory, found in 1857, and JV”RUMO”, another two large enterprises, are also involved in the shipbuilding ( a good half of all russian ships are produced in Nizhny Novgorod.
The world first motor boats and ships were created here as well.
